They began in 1981, with ESB in 83 and ROTJ (finally!) in 96, just before the Special Editions came out.
Writer Brian Daley had done the Han Solo trilogy books prior to this, and Lucasfilm (Carol Titleman, specifically) liked the way he handled the characters, so he got the call for this series. Sadly, he died on the night the cast finished taping the last episode of ROTJ. Tony Daniels has said he really appreciated the way Daley wrote for 3PO
The three series show up on Ebay with some regularity, if you want the whole set for yourself.
