if you watch closely in ROTJ you can get a sense for how they did it, just by watching Ben Kenobi walk around on dagobah. heh. its just a blue halo around the character and a texture of "Water" 
probably created by filming the surface of George's backyard swimming pool, and then overlayed on top of the footage of Alec Guinness. add a blue halo/rotoscope effect and thats all it is.
