If you think about it, Mace was standin closer to Palpatine than Obi was to Dooku, so mebbe the lightning needed some place to go, which would have been Palpatines face. Plus Mace sounded like he was strainin - seein as though usin the Force requires effort, mebbe he was usin the Force to keep it from touchin him, and it happened that because he was so close, it hit Palpatine and deformed his face.
