I've heard that Mace Windu was the first character Lucas created, but he didn't think people would identify with him, so he came up with Luke instead...
My favorite character is Anakin, with R2 a close second. I can't stand Luke, but he is slightly less irritating than C-3PO. How I laughed watching the Simpsons episode where it had the Cylon slamming 3PO
