I do get that "situational awareness" feeling- I guess you could liken it to "Jedi Sense".  It's something that practitioners of most martial arts develop once they reach a certain level of mental discipline. Essentially, you are consciously (with training it becomes unconscious, or at least habitual) shifting your brainwaves from Alpha to Delta. As the brain is then functioning slightly differently, it processes your sensory imput slightly differently, and allows you to be more aware of your surroundings (because you are sensing them slightly differently, and more accutely)
