I have been doing costumes for science fiction conventions for -- (shudder) -- 26 years now. It just happens that my first efforts were Star Trek and Star Wars costumes. Star Trek is out of fashion now, but I still have my Starfleet uniforms; and I'm very pleased that I still fit into them, even the miniskirt from the original series. They're still availlable for the odd occassion. Star Wars will inevitably be out of fasshion sometime, and I will likely be doing other types of costumes then, but I will still be a Jedi when the occassion arises. Many costumers start out in science fiction costumes and move to historical recreation, SCA, furry fandom, ballroom dancing or whatever. Or sometimes they start in SCA and move into historical re-enactment or SF. Right now there is a HUGE amount of youth and energy in anime conventions and costuming and there's a lot of discussion on the International Costumers' Guild list about maybe convincing some of them to bring some of that anime energy into the regular SF conventions and refresh the ranks of graying fandom. And maybe a few of them will be lured into other forms as costuming in the future as well. The International Costumer' Guild website is at: www.costume.org
