We have a local guy in the LA area who has made a fantastic R2. I love doing events when he can bring his R2 unit. It's always fun to watch people's reations, especially the kids, when they see him come rolling by! 
Mike, the builder, keeps adding new things to it. You should see the complicated RC controller he uses for it! 
I've been told that his R2 looks better than the original OT movie props (which have gotten a bit beaten up over the years).
I prefer the darker blue paint on Mike's version.
