GL based the Jedi on various religious "orders" and the story on established Archetypes. There is alot of similarity to a number of faiths and much can be read into it.
While one can make a good argument for comparison to a Christian-like faith there are other comparisons that would stand up as well. GL intended it to be sort of a plain vanilla religious order.
