My very first lightsaber, which was made for a college film project, was made just before TPM hit the screens, and that had a purple blade long before Master Windu's was seen 
Since then, my sabers have always had green blades, except for my Sith Costume, which naturally has to have a red blade. As with Count Dooku's saber though, the red bladed saber is the result of the crystal being replaced with an artificial one when the character devoted himself to the Dark Side
