The monks robes at the time were practical in a way but they also represented the symplicity of their vows and lives. From what I'd read, the Jedi's clothing is practical for the part of the galaxy they'er in, they too have a representational meaning of their simple lives and the force. On some worlds, the Jedi fit in, and others they stuckout. They'd defiantly stick out on this planet unless they walked into a science fiction convention.
