You're right about that, I think. It's the self image... It would explain why Obi-Wan appeared old, and why Anakin appeared young. It fits in both cases.
The other thing that makes me think it's a 'self-image' spirit, is that the last time Anakin actually saw his reflection, would have been when he was in his twenties, he would most likely have not seen (or wanted to see) himself as he was beneath the mask, so his only self-image, would have been from when he was still in his twenties.
