I am so glad that you were able to keep him, I could never give up a pet unless I was in dire circumstances like you...... Down here in hurricane land it is sickening how many people evacuate and leave their pets to fend for themselves...I don't care what the circumstances are, I would not leave my pets behind....they are the only true loyal things left on this planet..... but if something would ever happen like this again. You can give him to a pet store. Just have a vet's note that he is healthy. They will usually take them and re-sell....
