Yes, Pets can count as Kids 
As for that, I have three Pups. All Pure Breds. One Husky 2and half years old, Two Beagles, one male 3 years old, one female almost 3 years old. The Husky's name is Badgu(Pronounced Bad-Ju, like in Ju Ju beans) The male Beagle is Bailey, and the female Beagle is Paddles(named by niece) cause my niece said that the female one looked like she was paddling when she ran when she was just a tiny puppy.
And I'll tell you it is just like having three little kids around the house. Always a handful.
