No; it isn't selfish to ask for prayer for oneself. We do that at my church all the time; bringing prayer requests before the Lord.
Don't worry, Lazlo. I think it does make sense. Things can be rather confusing when you're new to something; and sometimes even when you're not new to it! I'll continue to keep you in my prayers.
