Thanks so much for your warm thoughts Schph, JediMom and J'aii-Gun. It's definitely going to be sad, and quiet, in our house for a while. However, as you said, I really believe it was the right thing to do. In his own little way, he actually let me know that he was ready and that it was all going to be okay. I spent his last night with us sleeping beside him on the livingroom floor. He wouldn't eat or drink, but every couple of hours he would gather up enough strength to get up, walk a few steps to get to my face, give me a kiss, as well as a few weak meows and purrs, and then go back to his blanket and lay back down. Then he would extend his little paw out to reach my hand as if to say, "it's ok", trying to comfort me. He was certainly one of a kind. At some point I'm sure I will more than likely end up with another cat(s), but Fenway will ALWAYS have a very special place in my heart.
