Never download smilies that you see offered for free in an ad, you'll probably end up with spyware, adware, etc. Right clicking on a smily and doing a "save image as" will only get you the JPG or GIF file... A JPG can't contain malicious code, I don't know about a GIF, it's doubtful that it could... the problem comes from the sites that give them away for free... if it's a private site, it probably isn't doing this, it's the sites that place ads on other sites that you have to look out for...
BTW, NEVER download the 'free' screensavers you see in ads unless you want a ton of adware on your PC... I keep all my smilies in Photobucket, since they need to be stores somewhere to work anyway.... and they've all been scanned for viruses and spyware...
There's no need to give them up, just be safe about it...
