Any of my fellow Jedi that used Osnaburg for their outer tunics, I have a concern and was not able to find anything on this using the forum search (actually got zero hits on "osnaburg" for the past 90 days, and two hits for the past 7 days -- figure that one out) How would you describe the drape? How does the fabric hang at the lined parts (sleeves and skirt)? I assume it is machine washable? Does it need ironing (or benefit from it)? I just got some Silk Noil the other day, but may save that for an under-tunic if you all have had good results with osnaburg. My main concern is how it flows/drapes, and how resistant to the "five-o-clock-wrinkles" it is (from those all-day events ... you know what I'm talking about ). I saw a brand new bolt of a very nice taupe osnaburg with lots of tan flecks in it at Jo-Ann locally. I ulfurled a bit and draped it over my arm and did the 'scrunch-up' test but can't tell if it has sizing or stuff on it from the manufacturer. My other tunics, one cotton gauze (not a uniform parallel-ribbed crinkle, but still OK) and the other a rayon/cotton texture, both do well in the wrinkle-resistance dept. Also, if I go with that, would the standard poly/silk type lining be OK, or is it better to use a cotton lining with that? Thanks in advance! ~ Koda

I never made a tunic from Onasburg... I'm not even sure what it feels like, but I know others swear by it. My guess would be that you would probably line it with something that flows similar to it.

It's all I use ... Machine washable ... yes ... I hang to dry and Iron makes it look crisp ... I use starch just on the middle of the tabards to help them stand up ... I've never lined it ... maybe on version 4 ...

Well I just took the osnaburg out of the dryer (hey, I'm lazy), and I have to admit it looks and drapes almost like the Silk Noil. I bet it's a bit stronger though. I stopped by Jo-Ann's after work and picked up some. The color is fantastic and it really does get a lot softer when you wash it. It lost *ALL* trace of the bolt-fold too. I didn't think that would come out but it did. I think this will look great when it's a jedi tunic. Like the gauze, it has a bit of stretch across the grain but almost no stretch with the grain. Overall it has a smooth surface as opposed to the crinkle ridges of the bubble gauze. I'd say it falls somewhere between a gauze and a duck canvas in texture. I will agree that you can't go by the way it feels on the bolt. There is some kind of sizing or stiffener in the fabric from the manufacturer. You have to pre-wash it to appreciate it. I can definately recommend it so far. Thanks guys! ~ Koda

Watch Wal-Mart & Hanthingy Fabrics ... Sometimes you can buy it for $1.00 to $1.50 a yard ... When it is at that price I usually buy the whole bolt ...

Wal Mart's standard price is at the moment $2.27 a yard, I always buy the bolt. It is perm press treated and does pretty well, as to the wrinkling, I just machine wash and throw in dryer. Have several in a few styles and lengths, and have made several for many custom orders. Absolutly should be pre wahed and HOT dried before cutting, shrinks a fair amount and also gets rid of sizing so drapes better. Will get softer as you wash it more often. I have never lined it, not nessecary at all, but would use lining cotton or china silk to line if I did. This year's crop is a shade darker than last year's, but very nice.

... I have never lined it, not nessecary at all, but would use lining cotton or china silk to line if I did... Well, I bought some lining but I may not use it. I'll try it on mid-project over an undertunic and see how it performs before I decide. Thank you for the suggestion, Nova. I have always lined the sleeves and skirt on previous tunics and like how it improves the drape and reduces friction against the undershirt-sleeves and the pants, but cooler and lighter is definately better too. ~ Koda

ok I'm confused---so what else is new? is it onasburg or osnaburg? because I call mine osnaburg but I might mean the onasburg-- ok I just confused everybody including me duh . I have 1 onasburg/osnaburg tunic, obi, tabord set--a bit heavier wgt I have 1 raw silk noire tunic, obi, tabord set--a bit lighter wgt both wash up very nicely. The, as I call it, osnaburg set does a nice job coming out of the dryer. It's a little bit warmer then the calcutta--which washes & dries beautifully.

According to dictionary.com it is "osnaburg" although according to Google, many people (not just Koda Vonnor) misspell it. Evidently the brain realigns the letters when it comes across uncommon patterns such as "osna." I stand corrected (as do my previous posts). ~ Vonnor p.s. i'll take some fries with that, Leda. p.p.s. yum.. tastes just like crow ... er... i mean chicken.
