Some synthetic blends of fabris are OK for a first costume. As long as the fabric looks natural, it's fine to start with. I'm replacing some early tunics I made from fabric that I had lying around; they were mostly cotton, but I couldn't swear to the fiber content. They could have easily have been up to 50% polyester. But they had a cotton look and feel, so they worked fine and they weren't too warm, though my sewing was a little questionable.
The thing you really don't want is fabric that has any shine or gloss. Jedi costumes don't have that.
One problem I have always had with muslin is that it wrinkles terribly. All natural fabrics have some wrinkle problems, but muslin always seems worse to me. Real Jedi don't iron....or at least they don't let you catch them doing it.

2 things that are good for that: Crinkle cotton, it's supposed to be wrinkle-y The Osnaburg from Wal Mart, is perm press treated, stays pretty good, much better than linen usually does.

If it's muslin and not a blend it's all natural, even when treated.

Good thing it's treated, muslin is worse than anything for wrinkles when it's not.

I have 2 different sergers, the 1 does a secure & finished seam, and I frequently save time by cutting w/ it. The other does mant things, but the stich is not good to be the seam stich, it will pull & show.

Yay! I recently have gotten my mom's old signer serger. I think it was made in late 60s or early 70s... She was actually happy to give it to me saying "I used it more then her anyway"... if only I would have had this when I made my current tunic...

yeah, but my current tunic has some parts that didn't hold the first wash cycle and coloration process, so I'll make it "battle damaged"
