Im going to have my little brother for a week this summer hopefully. Famillys movingfrom Michigan to Florida. My brothers name is Talon and hes only 9. He has the same great love for star wars as I do but my folks wont let him get involved in it as they have seen what is has done to me. SO they arn't buying him anything. Dosent mean others cant. ;D Anyway, I am going to be getting measurments from my mother sometime soon and I was wondering if anyone here would like to make a padawans outfit for me? I'd pay of course. Im thinking he can use just a regular belt for the costume as well?

You could do like I did for my Padawan-son... get a karate gi, dye it brown (including the obi) and modify a black leather belt. As fast as he's growing (and I'm sure as fast as your bro is growing) this may be the most cost-effective solution.

Karate Gi seams to be "the way" for smaller ones... From what I heard from other parents with kids disguising in Jedi, the costume confection is too expansive for the time it fits the kid, so Karate Gi + tabbards/obi and belt seams THE way to go. Plus, Gis are available at most martial art center.

When I've made them for the padawan set, I've always done them with extra hem width and shoulder tucks that could be removed so that they can wear them for a couple of years at least. A couple of times, I've made them from left over tunic or robe fabrics, depending on the padawan size, I always have a tendency to buy extra fabric anyway. Himiko, at least being involved with SW is not going to get you in trouble, like say getting involved with a gang or something good like that.

i have a feeling that we star wars nuts are a lot more psychologically healthy than most "normal" people. at least we have come to terms with ourselves and our "addictions"

I have a taekwondo center that I go to.. would that work?? and for the obi (thats the one around the waste right??) just go to a fabric store then? How did you modify the belt?? I particuly want this to look like the real deal. Like ours and th movies.

you don't need much tools. All I used wat a dremel. If you really want to, you can achieve a great result, for FAR less then having it made by others. Its up to you, pride of making it, or ease of buying it.
As far as the martial art garment goes, go and see, it might be OK. again, if you want it to look perfect, karate gi will look like it, but will certainly not be perfect, even after alterations and dye. Remember what Tanzan's tunic looked like? we could see he used a karate gi... but for a growing kid, its often less problems.

I was thinking of just using some fabric from walmart for the obi. what kind of dye did you use and ?? Looks nice. And how did you make the padawan belt??? I know its a regular belt.. but what did you do for the rest?? Im goign to go and get the Taekwondo ge to use for him. and what about an undertunic?

Regular black leather belt. Got some strips of leather from local craft store and some "buckles" off an old pair of ladies' dress shoes I found at Salvation Army. Basically I dyed and used leather glue to glue the leather strips to the belt but had to use rivets to attach the strips to the buckle.
Undertunic he just uses a tan t-shirt for now. Or long-sleeved t-shirt. You may be able to find a "wrap style" shirt in the girls' department you can alter a bit (just don't tell him it was a girls' shirt!)
One thing about the gi, the threads are probably going to be polyester so when you dye it, the threads will still be white. But after a while the threads do seem to darken a bit, but not as dark as the tunic itself. I used dark brown Rit Dye from Wal-Mart. I don't think teh tan will be dark enough after seeing how light the dark brown turned out. Pouch is a cell phone pouch from Dollar General
