We've been assuming that the tucks are about 3 inches deep--not sure about that but my seamstress seems to think so. She knows more than I do about tucks so that they lay correctly. In looking at the shoulder tucks more.... Obi's seem to be small... not even 3 inches... maybe two at most. You can see them in the Geonosis arena.

Aaaah, that's a side seam. Yes, it's well pressed, but the difference in the grain of the fabric gives it away. The advantage to the side seam and the whole 2-piece tunic is that you have more ways to lay out the pieces and you can use less fabric.
Ahhh, I've been looking at the patterns for their sleeve pieces. Simplicity #5840 has a tunic with curved sleeve shoulder seams. It's a very gentle curve, but it allows for some fitting. Simplicity #4450 (the one that just came out) has a tunic with straight sleeve shoulder seams though it does flare out under the arm.
About which to pick....I had no problem using osnaburg cotton with straight sleeve shoulder seams. It hangs fine. It might be different with a lighter fabric. And about fitting tunics in general for me.....I don't have much of what you'd call....ahem, a bust. I barely fill an 'A' cup. There is only 2-3 inches between my bust and waist measurements; I'm pretty straight up and down on top. So, a curve on the sleeve might not be that big of an issue for me, whereas it could be very important for anyone with broader shoulders, a larger chest or a real bustline.

I'm using the 5840 for my inner tunics because it's easier to adust the sleeves on this pattern & we're using 4450 for the outer tunics, except after trying on our muslin trial tunic the shoulder has to be adjusted for me & curve more.

With the outer tunic what is the usual length. I've seen knee length, but on one of the pix of Obi-Wan it looks like it is mid thigh.

Outer tunic length is variable, it depends on individual preference. Knee length is a little long (though the tabards can go that long). Upper to lower-calf seems to be typical for length.

About mid to upper thigh, right? Obi's gets a little longer in each film.

I had kind of made an observation on the length of the tunics...
It seems that the older the Jedi get...the longer it gets...
Obi-Wan's was really short in PM...and Qui-Gon's was a little longer....Mace wears a really long tunic...and of course...Ben Kenobi's hit the floor....
I also noticed that the more actual fighting a Jedi does also corresponds with the length of the tunic....a lot of the Council members (although they did lightsaber fight...they were mostly at the Temple) had longer tunics than the Jedi who were out on missions...
Probably not "cast in stone"...but just an observation...

I came to this thread with the same observation Schph so I believe there is validity to the point. Perhaps even unconsciously, GL intended something like that. A very subtle caste sort of thing?

Thank you that helps. I'm hoping to have the my 2nd costume ready for this Friday. If it's ready I can take pix of it this week end.

It's been an exciting night tonight. I got my new tunic, tabbords & sash & tried them on for the 1st time. It felt great but it does need some tweaking. I've got to put the velcro on to close the tunic & keep the tabbords in place. My tabbords for this tunic are a bit longer then my knee, is that ok or should we shorten them? I also have to hem up the sleeves about 2 inches to hide the lining & so that my hands are freer. It feels so strange to have a lined tunic but oh so nice, my 1st costume was not lined.

My tabbords for this tunic are a bit longer then my knee, is that ok or should we shorten them? That depends on how long the tunic itself is. Take a look at Mace Windu's tabbards, they look like they sit just above his knee (if he stood straight up). But the tunic is not much shorter. It just depends on the look you feel that suits you.

Thanks. I'm going to put it on again tonight & recheck the length. I personally think the tabbords need to be a bit shorter but that will be with the costume adjustments. I'm planning on hemming the sleeves tonight because they're a bit too long.
