Is there a fixed rule on how long/large tunic sleeves must be? Is it acceptable to have sleeves that terminate a few inches back from the wrist, and aren't particularly flared?

Nope, not fixed length or width. Check Episode 1 and 2 for various ideas on tunic sleeve length. They can be short, long, wide or narrow. One TJA member has very short over tunic sleeves that are reminiscant of archer's sleeves.

Fantastic, thanks Jauhzmynn That was something I was worried about, given the new uniform codes ;D

I have sleeves that vary in length from just below elbow to right at the knuckle, and vary from slight flare to pretty wide bell. Just have a nice undertunic, especially the sleeves.

Not a problem. Just have fun with it. Find a look that says you but is Jedi and go with it. I doubt jedi are 'cookie cutter' identical. Kai adi Mundi guy, his over tunic sleeves are narrow and long, they even cover the tops of his hands a little. His over robe is as short at the short(over shirt is hanging out of the pants) and has no sleeves. OY he's wearing a hoodie, how cool is that? :-D A member here as an avatar who's wearing an oufit nearly identical to kai adi's. Probably differances. Have you looked at the pictures of the members on the main jedi Assembly site? Loads of sleeves ideas there.

That's very true I've had a look through all the pictures and seen the variations, I just wanted to be doubly sure before it was submitted and rejected for something as simple as sleeve length

I have to admit that I always make my tunic sleeves long because I like them long, and most Jedi I see on the screen have them. But I've never seen any set rule about the length. In general, the human Jedi seem to cover up in the movies; I only remember seeing the non-human Jedi with any bare arm showing.

Well, at the moment, I'm hoping to be able to use the gi I ordered a few months back, so won't be able to return, so the sleeves will just be simple sleeves ;D

Well.... I actually worked on my outer tunic last night. Adventure Con is less than a month away! (And my companion will be in Starfleet gear so I can't let her show me up. ;D) I cut out and sewed the top front and back and attached the sleeves. Tonight I'm going to do the neck band, and next I'll do the skirt. I'm doing it in sections in case I need to "tweak" the pattern I've made as I fit things together. (Crinkle doesn't behave exactly like muslin....) Speaking of tweaking.... My sleeves are HUGE. I know Jedi sleeves are huge, but these seem to be TOO big and heavy, especially with the heavy crinkle cotton fabric. (I pre-washed it in HOT water so it has a really nice thick crinkle texture.) As per some different websites and patterns, I cut the sleeves 12 inches wide (well, 24 plus seam allowance) but maybe I should cut them back to 10 inches or so. My robe has 14 inch sleeves so I'll have plenty of clearance either way. I'd love to get some feedback for sleeve width. It's a "classic" Obi-Wan type tunic (but for a woman) with shoulder tucks and a separate "skirt". And I'm tall (5' 9") with long arms. My two prior Halloween costumes did not have very wide sleeves (they were both pirated bathrobes -- gasp) so maybe I'm just not accustomed to the size. (I still managed to drag my sleeve through my dinner plate this past year... ) Help me, Jedi seamstresses and tailors, you're my only hope......

I can give it a try. :-)
I usually make my sleeve widths 10-12 inches wide, no widder. You cna make them even as narrow as your arm. (This is seen in Episode 2 geonosis arena on some Jedi.)
Or you can completely remove the sleeves, or cut the total length to a 3/4 length.

So I'm confused about whether your measurements are folded sleeve or not...
my overtunic sleeves are 10 inches folded or 20 inches.
My robe sleeve is not really big by comparison to some Jedi robes and it is 20 inches folded, total of 40 inches.

Masters Mynn and Kai to the rescue! Thank you ladies, and sorry to be confusing... It's 12" wide folded and sewn up into a sleeve but the fabric piece is 24" wide plus seam allowance. Last night I attached the neckband to the tunic and tried it on with the sleeve tucks sort of pinned into place. That helps with the width at the top of the sleeve (makes it sort of taper going into the shoulder) and with the sleeve hems pinned, it does look a little less bulky, but it's still pretty big. I know there is a lot of variation but I don't want it to be out of proportion. There is a really good picture of Mace (and his sleeve) in the lightsaber battle part (toward the back) of the AOTC Visual Dictionary. I was trying to gage the width of his sleeve as compared to the size/length of his hand (between 7-8 inches??) and was guessing about 10-11 inches?? I guess I'm over-analyzing, but it sounds like 10 inches is about right. But Mynn, I believe you said somewhere that you're petite so perhaps 12 inches is not too wide for me. Maybe I'll compromise at 11... sigh... It's that perfectionist curse.... Ladies, thank you SO much for your feedback! And I'm still polling for any other comments...

WIth my fabric laid out the sleeve would be 24 inches wide.(12"folded). That works. It shouldn't be too wide for you unless it's merely personal preferance and THAT"s all that matters. What youwant not us. ;-)
