I thought I remembered hearing that the original Obi-Wan robe in ANH started out as an old army blanket, but I'm not sure about that. But it makes sense that the robe would be part of a Jedi's survival gear. And we see from the movies that it's made for that miracle GFFA material that goes from soaking wet to totally dry in 30 seconds, so it's probably comfortable in all weather conditions.
I suppose the robe would be the Jedi equivalent of a galactic hitchhiker's trusty towel.
Interesting about the priestly look with the tabbards. That makes sense to me. The tabbards, or stole (as Ben Kenobi and some prequel Jedi had) might be the traditional element in the Jedi costume, along with the basic cut of the tunic. And once you have tabbards or a stole you almost have to have the obi just to keep them from falling off, especially in a fight.

As for the robe, everytime I get caught in the rain in costume, I know why Jedi have robes. They are protection from bad weather and such. Just imagine all the different worlds Jedi have to travel too. The rainy planet of "Indy during CIII" comes to mind! ;D Those Jedi robes were downright practical waiting outside for the doors to open!

You were there, too?! Yes, the wool robe in 40 degrees and rain, standing in line for 3 hours (grrrr!) was definitely a plus. I was damp but I was warm.

The second time I wore my robe was at I-Con. It was windy and rainy and we all said "Now we know why Jedi wear wool robes!" Jedi also seem to attract the rain or so we began to think. Everytime we were in costume, it rained!

Galactic hitchhiker's towel-lol! Ah, yes, the planet Indy-CIII! I was very glad for the warmth and protection of my robe. I think my boots have dried out by now...
