sorta demonstrates though, what this prop hobby is all about....to some it's a useless hunk of plastic...to others it's a cast of a kobold flashgun...made into a droid caller....
things are only worth what someone is willing to pay for them....the dollar value is arbitrary.

As for the sword auction: I remember when these "Future Samurai/Ninja 3000" swords first hit the market several years ago (around 1999?). They were described as having a "lightsaber" like hilt in sword review magazines. The hilt does resemble a lightsaber's (for some reason I am reminded of the general shape of Mace Windu's). I rather liked the Samurai 3000 swords when Bud-K first put them out...and they're still in the catalogues.

Oh jeeze people, I didn't mean to go around offending people with the word "scam". It was just meant in a bit of fun, seeing as how someone was asking so much for something that is so cheap to make. I think you all need a large dose of "get over it". <<<NO OFFENSE. Anyway, it was just meant as something amusing. That being said. I'm done with this post. LOL

Jedi Wannabe, you might want to think about the impact of the words you use as titles of threads... what you think as fun can be uber offending to someone else. Remember, we're not talking, we're typing, there is no such thing as a non-verbal communication over internet forums.
I fully understand the reaction of people out there about this thread... its blown out of proportion from all sides, without any needs, and people should meditate with Yoda on the sense of the words they use and the actions they take before going on their next mission with their padawans.

Well said, Olos.
I have a Samurai 3000... actually, I have two of them. One is curved, like a katana, and the other is straight like the one in the ebay picture. I was thinking about selling one or the other, but seeing the winning bid on that one, I think I may wait a bit!

LOL So you think that just because a hand-made lightsaber does not cost much to make it is worthless? There is such a thing as labour value to consider as well. A professional in any field will likely charge upwards of $30 an hour for the time they have put into a project, and a hand-made lightsaber is no exception. I appreciate that you meant the thread in fun, but before you suggest that people need to 'get over it', maybe you should consider why people found it offensive. Have you ever made your own lightsaber? If so, these points might be usefull: 1. How much would it cost (to make in metal) if you had to purchase every part and every tool again in order to re-make it? 2. How long did it take you to make it? (I charge £30 an hour for work, that's $52 and change) How much could you have made if you charged an hourly rate to make your lightsaber? 3. How good is the quality of your work? Do you leave scuffs on the metal or do you polish them out? Would the saber (like the one on the auction) look well made or not? Many people simply do not have the skill to make a lightsaber themselves, so they pay someone (RandomSabers, ebay etc) to do it for them, and the price always reflects a) the complexity of the project and parts/tools required, b) the quality of the finished project, and most importantly, c) the time of the person who is making something they cannot. People are aware of those factors when considering price, and pay accordingly. Taking all those things into consideration, you might see why people (myself included) found your suggestion of a scam offensive. As Olos said, there is no subtelty in communication on forums, it can be hard to guage a persons tone, and what was intended as a joke, can cause great offence.

Olos: Well said indeed!
Tanzan: Give it up man, I understand where you are coming from, and I assumed that I had retracted the "scam" bit to everyone's satisfaction. BTW I have infact made a few metal sabers hilts in my life. 1) about 50 bucks american (of course my whole dremmel set was a gift) 2) 45 minuates after some pactice with a prototype, and I've never charged for labor ever. 3) I've infact begun to polish and I don't personally (which may vary from person to person) find it difficult.
Everyone: Alas I shall say it again, it was not meant to be labeled or suggested as a crass money making scheme that takes money from defensless old ladies and niave children. IT WAS JUST FOR FUN!
