if you go for accuracy, you should go wool. But being that wool costs an arm and a leg, people often go for something else.
Stay away from syntetic material, you won't like it.

My robe is from MystikMerchant, and I am very happy with it. It is heavy weight cotton. I received many compliments about it at work this past Halloween.
One suggestion. Their instructions for measuring say to measure fingertip to fingertip. They say a Jedi robe is suppose to completely cover your hands. That may be true, but it is inconvenient. I had to have my sleeves shortened. I suggest you measure knuckle to knuckle or tell them you don't want to have the sleeves extend past your fingertips.

heavy weight cotton can flow like wool when worn and is comfortable. Wool is still the best for accuracy but will likely be twice the price. It's your call

Mystik Merchant's colors are off a bit for Obiwan. The pattern is dead on though. I sold mine because the color was wrong. Try Captain Carter's costumes. Very accurate.

I have a cotton Mystik Merchant robe... Mace Windu style, and couldn't be happier with it... granted it is not wool, but it flows and looks dead on to most people.

I'm not so extremely impressed with the pics from Kropsirkle, Mystic M does some nice stuff, but the robe with the buttons doesn't say Jedi to me at all.

I purchased the Luke ROTJ robe from Mystik for my C-IV costume and was very pleased with the quality of their work. Their service was awesome as well as I had the robe within a week of ordering it.

:)My very 1st official robe was from mystic merchant & when I got measured by a friend according to mystics recommendations. I had to make adjustments to the length of robe & sleeves.
The 1st time I wore it, it was way to long & got caught in a door. So now I have it short enough so it doesn't drag, it just barely touches the floor
I love the robe, it's well made & I've worn it to several events. It flows beautifully. It folds & travels well. No wrinkles or so few you can't see them. I have since added a pouch on the inside to it plus a loop to carry my f/x lightsaber with me, so I don't have to carry it all over, if my arms get tired.
I have more of an Obi-Wan styled robe from Cloak & Dagger. It is closer to the Obi-Wans color of robe & it is wool. Though the price is higher then mysti merchant.
I bought some melton wool, which I found for sale on line & have since made myself 2 robes just to see if I could make them without the shoulder tucks.
I've put pouches & saber loops in all my robes.

At the expensive of showing how much of a wealth of pointless knowledge I can be at times, I am sorry and here goes. I deeply apologize in advance because this post, I know already, will be very long. But who knows you may find it somewhat useful. The pictures at the end are in the order which I talk about them in this post. The robes worn in the movies have always been my favorite part of the costume (Obi's in particular) next to the boots and I devoted probably a good six months worth of research into both (more time spent working on the robe though) and I have only come out of it all with someone knowing someone who has a pretty good Obi-Wan Ep III robe that I've never seen upclose enough to know if it is really one I like and a bootmaker who might just be able to finally make the Ep I & II boots I like acurately. Now onto the robe(s). The movie robes were made of wool (obviously) and with the exception of Obi-Wan's Phantom Menace robe which I know little about I know for sure that the other two prequel trilogy robes were made out of a wool twill with diagonal weaving pattern. The robes were two piece with either a pleat in the back or not depending on the scene and if Kenobi needed a nice flow or just a straight down so it so it wouldn't get in the way during any type of action. The hood was a one piece with a seam going up about half of it. This covers the main details of the robe without getting way too technical and showing how little of a life I had for the later half of 2005 and into 2006. As for MystikMerchant, their "Mad Seamstress" used to post on here but you can still contact her through their website and get a pretty speedy reply to get your questions answered. Their robes however are not as acurate as they can lead on at times and to someone who is trying to get a dead on replica of a robe has probably noticed this and if it doesn't bother them they will just buy one anyway to save a lot of pain and research (I clearly should have done this). To start Mystik uses a three piece design with a pleat, the pleat is great but the shoulder seams drove me nuts. The pictures below will illustrate a few other little things that are different from the movie robes and their robes. These are small differences to most but being the stickler I am for accuracy I couldn't bring myself to live with them. The first is the neck facing, the link to Mystik's facing shows its not a straight cut compared to the pictures of Obi-Wan's Ep I and III robe which is. The strip that goes over the hood seam is interesting too but not that important so I won't go over it here. The hood is the other main thing I didn't agree with about their robes, they use a wide fold over for the seam around it much like on their sleeves. They change this for the wool robes that they offer once in a while so my only guess is that they want the hood to be stronger when not using a heavy fabric like Melton. However even though I know next to nothing about sewing and/or the manufacture of garments I know that the 1" seam used down the front of the robe would have been fine, possibly still a bit too wide but much more accurate around the hood. While on the topic of the hood I can also say that aside from the hood the Cloak Maker robe is pretty dead on too. They use a two piece hood but you might be able to talk them into changing that for your robe. Their sleeves might need to be angeled out a little more but ask them and I am sure they would probably make a couple slight changes for you. The last thing you need to know about the hood is that it was bigger for Revenge of the Sith than it was for the other movies, to show this you can see the front back pic of Obi from Ep I and the back screen shot from Ep III. Note how much more the hood hangs down over his shoulders in the next picture, even as far as over the shoulder tuck. As for fabric I have been looking for that perfect one for a long long time. Cocoa seems to be the one color you can never find cotton twill in (I live in Arizona and thus need a cotton or silk robe) I have been able to find a silk but I would personally like cotton twill. The melton Mystik had in some time ago was almost the perfect color would have been too heavy. I have only ever seen cocoa twill once and it vanished to never show itself again, it might be like the sith so if I wait a thousand years I might get lucky. The funny thing about the color of the fabric is that you can never tell exactly what it is suppose to look like (as far as color) unless you know a bit about lighting and photography. Most of the still shots from the movies have to be thrown out of telling you about the color because of the differences in lighting. Same thing goes for some promo shots because of incandescent blubs versus types of natural sunlight versus any other lighting source out there. In short, Kenobi's robe looks reddish sometimes because its the sun hitting it weird or the bulbs make it look that way. If you really want to see the color look for a picture taken in the shade but during the day around something else earth toned so as not to alter the light like the Obi-Wan Ep I promo shot below. In closing I can basically say that if you want the look without searching high and low for the perfect robe or look, then go with Mystik Merchant or Cloak Maker. If you want to make your own because you want a screen-accurate replica robe then email me (RichardLillard1@gmail.com) and I can send you a TON of pictures of different robes, patterns, and detail shots of the robes from the movies. I can also give you more than a few pointers here and there about how to make it look just right. Good luck, and remember these are just my opinions about the robes, Mystik Merchant and Cloak Maker are great companies and they have fine products with outstanding customer service. It just wasn't what I was looking for. The most scary part is that this is only a little bit of what I know. Again I am sorry about this being so long. mystikmerchant.com/ChocolateBrown4Detail.JPG
