Looking at promo images from the films, I leave about 4 inches ( or more, depending on how broad one's shoulders are) on each side of the neck opening ungathered and then gather the rest so that it fits the neck opening. Emailing you some high res photos from FIDM.

The one caveat I would give: re hoods For someone making his/her own pattern or muslin, be sure NOT to make the neck opening too large (on the actual robe part). This is especially important if you're tall and use the back pleat -- more fabric = more weight. I probably did my neck opening a wee bit too large -- but I did it to accomodate the hood gathers -- it was a bit like wrestling an alligator to get that thing attached. Overall, I really am very pleased with my robe, but when it is open at the front with hood down, as is normally done, the weight of the back pulls farther down on the nape of my neck than I would have liked. (I did sort of a modified Anakin -- since I'm tall and brunette.) Hope this helps someone. Kryy

I have run into that problem with other costumes...neck too big. The whole thing seems to droop off the body and there is just about no way to fix it without causing problems in the rest of the garment. I always start with a 6 in neck, but I'm not very big. Someone taller, with broader shoulders might start with something larger. If it's too small, then you can always make it bigger, but 6 in works fine for just about everything for me, even a heavy, Jedi robe.
