What Ani said.
I bought some wool melton cheap. I made a street coat (meaning...meant to be ordinary street clothes, not costume) out of it from the pattern of my Jedi robe. I made it shorter, with smaller hood and sleeves. It is still very heavy. It's good for winter here as it keeps me warm and dry in Seattle's cold winter rains. However, I would not want to have a full Jedi robe made out of it.

In the back of my mind...I would still like to make a Jedi robe out of Melton wool....simply because it is supposed to be what they made the robes out of for the movie...
but...just like Ani.....I have already made 3 robes... one I donated to a Breast Cancer auction at a Con....
the second one I actually cut up to make the Charity Jedi Ki-Adi Mundi robe for Celebration III.....
and the third I have...and I do love....it is made of 100% wool...but it is a lightweight wool....and I still rarely ever wear it....

Thank you for your recommendation. I'm not sure of the wgt yet because we haven't had time to work with it. But I'm kind of kooky because I'm not fond of light wgt clothes. I handle the heat pretty well, except 95+ humidity. Yes I do sweat but the humidity has to be quite high. The current robe I have is doing well but since we live in the midwest I thought I'd like to be prepared. I didn't have this robe at C3 because I didn't even know I'd become a member of TJA until I got back home so I don't know how warm it would have kept me. I know I could have definitely used a woolen robe in Indianapolis in April because I was really cold & had several layers on. I'm a person who definitely does the layer thing, even in summer. yep, I know it's weird. lol But as they say whatever makes you comfortable.

Yes, a melton wool robe last April in Indianapolis would actually make sense! Though you'd want some place to put it once you get inside. It really sounds like a cool weather parade robe. Whereas here.....it is 80+ deg with high humidity for six months out of the year at least. I have to use something lighter, though I still lean toward the wool. Heat doesn't bother me too much, either.
Now I'm wondering where the reference is that says they used melton wool in the movies? Neither the Obi-Wan nor the Anakin swatch are that thick and the Obi-Wan swatch has a diagonal, twill kind of weave. And on screen the Jedi robes billow nicely, which makes me think that they're not more than medium weight fabric.

Thanks for the intel. I still have to find out how it feels on me. That won't be for awhile. I'm not sure if I really want a billowing robe, I've got one, which billows beautifully but it's awkward in tight places. I'd like to have one that does the job for my costume but maybe not so full. I'm going to have to meditate on it for awhile. I've got a trip to go on & a couple of more tunics to make 1st.

agreed Ani.....I have been looking at the Obi-Wan swatch a great deal.....and it is a heavier wool than mine....but not so heavy....and ....yes...I noted the golden brown weave in there also....
lol....yeah....I am sure we will find that....not!

Right Schph, it seems it's very difficult to find any of the movie screen fabrics, at least in my area of Joliet & I really don't have time to go around to fabric stores around the Chicago land area.

Over the last several years I've been in hundreds of fabric stores both in the NYC garment district and in other cities in the US and UK and finding the fabrics that we're looking for is not easy, or inexpensive, unless we just get lucky! But the hunt, while frustrating, is really fun.

I do not know if they still sell bolts of the fabric, but Deva Lifewear has some really nice all cotton fabrics that might do nicely for a robe. The best part is they are all breathable and comfortable.

When I head to Vegas this week, family wedding, & some fun, I hope, I think I'm going to see if there is a fabric store around there. Because of how warm it is I'm hoping I can locate some good light fabric for anything Jedi. It would make a great gift to myself. hee, hee.

I sent for a couple of swatches from Denver fabrics a couple of weeks ago. The Coffee Liqueur color Wool/nylon Flannel 18949 (which sounds like the stuff Ani was useing) was REAL nice looking stuff and even pretty cheap at $8.98 a yard It seemed just a touch lighter then Obi Wan's robe, BUT, it even had the same twill-esc inside texture or look and fuzzy outside. www.denverfabrics.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Product_Code=18949Ani, I would love to see a pick of the robe finished. I came REAL close to buying that fabric I went for broke. I bought the Wool/nylon Cocca color Coating from Denver fabrics, 20110 (not much of this stuff left over there if your thinking of getting some, 28 yards left on the site as im writing this) www.denverfabrics.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Product_Code=20110$14.98 a yrd, but I LOVE this material, not real heavy, but heavier then the flannel, a nice color and fuzzy. My Mother (My head seamstress ) and I, went through the patterns to make the needed changes to them tonight, but havent cut it out yet. I CANT WAIT till its done, I might use it in place of my blanket, hehe (Magus looking like Peanut Linus with a new Blankey ;D ) A warning to all, DO NOT get the Camel color pure wool Coating 21041, its cheap at $8.98, BUT, its TAN and not as dark as the picture. It would need to be dyed. Get swatches from them for stuff you may be interested in, the pics on the site are NOT real accurate. (the word CAMEL should have been my first clue, but I got a swatch to be sure) Denver fabrics has been GREAT to deal with too. You might want to sign up for thier news letter, I was able to save the shipping cost for the wool from a coupon they had in a news letter Email The box was over 10 LBs with 8 yrds of my wool

I came REAL close to buying that fabric Well, I need to undo and redo something and hem the facings and experiment on my hidden chin strap to see if I can add something that will keep the hood up, but the overall body of the robe is put together. It will be large and flow-y with typically, impractically large Jedi sleeves and hood. Definitely a "winter" robe. I love it already.
It's a similar color to Obi-Wan's robe, but hardly a match. I think it's about the same tone, but a more faded shade of brown. But since I don't look anything like Ewan McGregor, that's not a problem.
