How well would a Poly 45/cotton 55 blend dye with Rit? Working on Karm's costume and need to go cheap since he's gonna outgrow it in a year or so

I've tried to use Rit dye on a 60/30 gii. The dye was the cocoa or dark brown....it came out brown, but kind of "faded" Also, hte stitching must have been made of polyester so all of the stitching was still white.

Even if the fabric feels natural, sometimes the synthetic in it just keeps the dye from taking; this also makes the fabric stain resistant. You likely won't be able to get it very dark, but fortunately "faded" is a good, Jedi color..

Cor-Al, Is this for the robe or the tunic, and how tall is Karm? Also is it just fabric or is it a garment already? That can make a difference in the dying. How much yardage are you trying to do?

If you want the color that's on the dye package with a 60/40 blend this is what I did: use twice as much dye as the packaging says and do it in a bucket use boiling water and add as much pickling salt as the dyebath will take add the wet fabric/clothes or whatever and stir the bejesus out of it for as long as you can stand rinse it till the water turnes clear and dry it on high in the dryer. (Idid this with rit dye) If you wash it in the machien it WILL fade there's nothing you can do about that unfortunently. (even faded out it's a Jedi-ish color)

I prefer to use the powered dyes from Dharma trading company. I've used RIT< but unfortuantly it does fade.

The Dharma dyes always get higher recommendations than the more common Rit ones. However, faded colors still work very well for Jedi, especially in browns. If you use the stove top method where you're practically boiling the fabric to dye it, the Rit will fade less. Heat sets a color. Just don't put it in with anything light colored the first few times you wash it. After dying, I always wash it with white vinegar to help set the color. And then wash it again to get the vinegar smell out.
