Knowing the kind of actor that Sam is, as I said about Hayden, any 'flaws' in his acting are a result of him perfectly following Lucas' sab-par attempts at directing.

Lucas A great director I would say that it was more the way they read the script than George's directing or Hayden or Jackson's acting

Lucas A great director I would say that it was more the way they read the script than George's directing or Hayden or Jackson's acting I'm sorry, but are you serious? Some of the dialogue in RotS is appalling and cringeworthy (Anakin and Padme's 'love scene' for example) Sam Jackson is a fantastic actor (I've been a fan for years, way before he wound up in Star Wars) and the same goes for Ewan McGregor, who is my all-time favorite actor. Hayden, I haven't seen in anything else, but Ewan and Sam are both First Rate actors, and if anything is wrong with the 'performance' of actors of that callibre, it is entirely because of the person directing, and the performance they can inspire from them, as even the worst script can be well shot by a skilled director and good actors. But when you get a director who specifically tells actors to emulate the style of acting from decades before, then the performances they give will not be what today's audience would classify as 'good'. That's Lucas' reasoning/excuse for the entire saga, that it is all homage to that old era of film-making. That's why I say that their performances are good, because technically, they are doing precicely what the director wants of them, so that's the person who's 'at fault', not the actors themselves.

I agree with the both of you. I think that GL could've done a little better. HOWEVER, all of the Lucas bashing is getting a bit trying with me.

Both points are valid. Lucas does do well what he wants, however...he focuses too much on emulating a particular era of film making with the acting, diologue, and such. It was fine for the time it was popular in, but it doesn't cut it anymore. Too stilted, too much like reading from a cue card...
I think what the difference lies within is that in the original Trilogy, the cast often had fun with what they were doing and grew the character in their , while in the prequels, George is adament about things being done exactly his way, and not recognizing that a character has to grow from the actor, not the page alone...
This is not Lucas bashing, this is simple statements of observation. Even the Big Three of Harrison, Mark, and Carrie has said that George didn't understand the side of the actors, it was on the Empire of Dreams documetry. To put it simpley; George knows storyboarding, but not the process of bringing the characters to their own life instead of emulating what's on a page. It's his biggest flaw, and it probably always will be. Nothing that can be done about but his own actions.

Very well said. I agree.
But we just had a thread blow up over Lucas' directing. I'd hate to see this thread fall that way.

I will admit Lucas is not perfect and we are all entitled to our opinion BUT we have got to start showing each other some respect and settle down before I start locking posts.

Just to get back to Samuel Jackson's acting... In my opinion, Mr Jackson's acting is best, when he appears angry, or on the verge of "losing it". However these traits are rarely displayed by a Jedi- so I believe that Mr. Jackson was forced to limit his acting ability in order to fit into the role. Quite frankly, Mr Jackson's portrayal of Mace Windu was pretty one dimensional. He was most inspiring when he had Palpatine at bay, and delivered his "I AM GOING TO END THIS" line. Classic Samuel Jackson; full of passion and fury (and quite un-Jedi like).

yes I am serious and I think you need to watch what you are saying about the man who inspired what we do here Why? What are you going to do about it? More importantly, what is he going to do about it? Sue me for libel? That only works when someone is lying, and I'm only telling the truth and stating facts. Seriously, I would love Lucas to actually make an issue of this, because I would resoundingly win. As Lost Skywalker has pointed out, Lucas does well what he wants. If he can't be bothered to shoot a scene with the apropriate 3:1 Ratio, then he doesn't, because he knows no one else on set is going to argue with him, and personally, I think that is a disgusting attitude for a director to take, because it shows nothing but sheer self-indulgence. I have no problem with little 'in jokes', but a director should always keep in mind the audience who will be viewing their work, and their expectations, but Lucas does not do that. Just because I like Star Wars, it doesn't mean I have to pretend Lucas is a great director. Again, as Lost Skywalker said, Lucas makes films in a style that was once popular, but quite frankly, doesn't cut it anymore. If people 40 years ago were to see the Star Wars saga, they would love it and not see a single error, but as an audience, we are much more sophisticated than the people were then, and have higher expectations in what we watch, and directors have the responsibility of keeping up with those demands. Films are made to entertain us, the audience, not for the self-indulgence of the person making them. If you seriously think Lucas is some fantastically skilled director, then I suggest you re-watch the prequel trilogy without the 'rose-tinted glasses'. Then go and watch Lipstick on Your Collar, Moulin Rouge, TrainSpotting, Pulp Fiction, Rules of Engagement and 51st State and then come back and try telling me that Ewan and Sam are sub-par actors and their performances in Star Wars were their faults and not the fault of a sub-par director with a seriously limited style of writing.

Master Jorlac, I give respect to those who earn it and deserve it. I do not take kindly to threats from people like Jaryk, and maybe you should remind him not to make them to people just because they have an opinion he does not like. I have said nothing that was not true, and have backed up my point on numerous occasions. If Jaryk does not like that opinion, then so be it, but he has no place telling me to watch what I say.

Quite frankly I'm tired of the whole jist of these type of threads because no respect can be given when none is hardly earned. Jedi are supposed to humble and gratious and I just don't see it put forth in these types of discussions.
Thread locked.
