So what are those purple lightning saber things called? I find them to be very cool, and i'm wondering what they're called.
I've looked on Star Wars Database, but no luck.

I did a bit of searching and although I don't have a clear-cut name, they have been referred to as a "Manga Guard Electro-Staff".
This is a secret weapon created by General Grevious, that is the only weapon able to stop a lightsaber blade (other than another lightsaber).

Yup... in the Visual Dictionary it's call a MagnaGuard Electrostaff.

not only can an electrostaff or lightsaber counter a lightsaber but so can any weapon with a cortosis weave. *1st known refrence: Star Wars Obi-Wan (video game)

cortois weave came from the RPG...video game makers use RPG books heavily it seems.

So, the EU authors that use cortosis sheilds in their stories originally got it from a video game?

The cortois weave was a electronic mesh that was put on weapons to disrupt and distribute energy.
in the RPG, cortois would "break" and dissipate a lightsaber's energy beam.
In the games, it was toned down a bit so that it could simply withstand a lightsaber.

Indeed. Vibroblades in Knights of the Old Republic have no trouble deflecting a saber blade.
Having said that you can swipe your blade clean across someones chest in that game and they don't fall in half so it may not be the finest and most accurate EU proponent of Star Wars physics. ;D
